So i'm getting close to being fully upgraded to 10 gallons batches. My mash tun is a 10 gallon Old Spice Igloo cooler. Works great for 5 gallon batches but I'm thinking it my be to small for a lot of other styles. I did some research and it said it can hold 24lbs of grain with 1.25qts per gallon. So my question is... how many pounds of grain has any of you ever gotten into an igloo cooler?

Dunno. Make sure Don sees this question as he's our resident pusher of the mash envelope. I can tell you that Don and I managed to get just under 50 pounds of dry mash — I think it was 48 pounds at about one quart water/lb. — in a converted half-barrel keg. Extrapolating, that should put you in the 32 pound range (48*10/15 = 32).

That's not the mash where you had to strain through the strainer because it got stuck??? Was it?

Nope, that was an attempted Triple Karmeliet clone. The really big mashes happen on Samichlaus Day.

I can vouch for the 48# of grain in converted keg. I've done that and 46# a few times. Never had a problem with stuck mash but it made it difficult to stir the mash (to ensure efficient sparging) if desired before final runoff (using pump recirculation) as there just wasn't much room left to stir. Just fly sparge and hope for no channeling.
