I have been thinking of entering some competitions, but dont really know the best way to ship the beer. I've never shipped beer for a competiton before....only local comps.

I thought I would ask the pro's, but they were unavailable.....so I thougt I would ask here.

So what is the best way to ship the beer?

How much should I expect to spend shipping the beer?

How much time should I ship in advance of the deadline?

Any other tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Al,

I do it all the time. First off you must realize it is against the law for individuals like homebrewers to ship it. DO NOT USE THE US POST OFFICE PERIOD!!!!

But don't worry.I always use UPS and when asked about contents respond "yeast samples packed well." Since I get belong to a Beer of the Month Club I reuse those boxes they are perfect. If you don't have these just heavy hardboard boxes and wrap the bottles well in bubble wrap. Remeber those delivery guys don't like to carry to heavy of packages for 12 bottles or less are the way to go. I think some guys just drop the boxes on purpose to test the boxes.

Cost will vary upon distance and amount of bottles. General rule $15 - $20 to ship a 12 pack box. Figure 4-5 days. Now this time of the year our high heat comes into play.

Best of luck to you, what contest you thinking about?

CB Don

Thanks for the input Don. I was thinking of sending in an entry for the cactus challenge.

I bottled a 6 pack from my last batch of kolsch and have decided to save them for competition. 3 are going to be for the dixie cup and the other 3 for whatever comes along. Looks like the cactus challenge is next.....gonna give a try and see how it goes.
